Japanske Yusuke Harada ble tildelt Picture of the Year i konkurransen PGB Photo Award 2012. Bildet er tatt i Libya under den arabiske våren og viser opprørere som kneler for å be på veien fra Sirte til Misrata. 33 år gamle Harada har fotografert flere kriser og konflikter verden over, men fokuserer på å dokumentere diskrimering og brudd på menneskerettigheter.
3000 fotografer fra 93 land deltok i årets utgave av konkurransen. Blant vinnerne av de ni kategoriene var britiske Anastasia Taylor-Lind, som gjestet Dok12 i februar, danske Mads Nissen som vant portrettkategorien med et bilde av Jens Stoltenberg og svenske Martin von Krogh.
Rémi Ochlik, som mistet livet på tragisk vis i Syria tidligere i år, fikk førstepris i kategorien Spot News Picture of the Year.

Hussein Saleh Hassan, age 52, is fatally wounded. He was hit in the head by a gunshot when he together with a group of local residents attacked and burned down the central police station in Tobruk on 17 February. This was one of the very first violent attacks performed by civilians during the Libyan revolution.

Few years later Vanessa started to prostitute herself to survive, on February 5, 2011 in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. This impoverished community took up residence in an old abandoned chocolate factory on the coast in Salvador de Bahia. Despite the lack of socio-economic support from the government, they have managed to make a safe place for themselves to live, and form a community of their own, which is safer that the alternatives available to them. However they are currently being evicted by the government due to being there illegally.
